February Principal's Message

February 1, 2017

Dear Holman Families:

It’s hard to believe that football season will end this Sunday as the Falcons and Patriots compete to see who the champion is.  Even if you’re not a Falcons or Patriots fan, many of us will celebrate with friends and family and enjoy the commercials shown throughout the game.  It is also hard to believe that half of the school year is over. As always, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions about their progress.   Additionally, it is important for students to arrive to school on time.  The homeroom period provides students with a smooth transition to a day of learning.  At this time, the students review the day’s schedule, copy homework assignments, listen to morning announcements, get breakfast and distribute notes and materials from home to their teachers.  To provide your children with a positive start to the day, please plan your morning so your child arrives to school at 8:35 a.m. After 8:45 a.m., students are considered tardy.

School will be closed for students on Friday, Feb. 3rd HS Transition day.

School will be closed for staff and students on Monday, Feb. 20th in observance of Presidents Day.

The next HOPE meeting will be on February 15th at 7:00pm in the Holman IMC.   We invite all parents to attend this session.

If you would like to be updated on upcoming HOPE events, I encourage you to register for the “HOPE News” REMIND feature for your text and/or email.  Registration is easy.  Click on this REMIND link and follow the instructions on the flyer.

Holman Yearbook - Don’t forget to order the Holman Yearbook for 2016 - 2017. All Yearbooks purchased before March 10th are being offered at a discounted rate.  The deadline to order yearbooks is March 31, 2017.  Please check the eBackpack for more information.

Book Fair – Holman’s Book Fair will begin on Friday, February 17th, kicking off Read Across America Week.  Check the website banner for special daily events.  Dr. Seuss Night, an evening event during Read Across America Week, celebrates Dr. Suess and the love of reading.  This special, fun-filled night is scheduled for Thursday, February 23, 2017.  In order to accommodate the anticipated large attendance, there will be two sessions:  Families with last names beginning L-Z  will start at 6:00pm.  Families with last names beginning A-K will start at 7:15pm. A ticket is required to enter through the Holman Gymnasium. This will be the ONLY entrance to the building allowed that night.  Please join us in this opportunity to celebrate reading! We hope to see you there.  Keep looking on the Holman website for further information.

Looking and Planning Ahead:

A BOE meeting is scheduled for February 14th in the Administration Building at 5:30 PM where 2017-2018 Budget Presentations will begin.  The BOE Business Meeting is February 21st at 6:30 PM in JMHS Fine Arts where Teachers and Educational Support Professionals of the Year will be recognized.

Math Night

Parents and their children are cordially invited to attend our Family Math Night.  Designed to engage and empower families to support their children’s academic achievement, Family Math Night will feature strategies to help parents of grades K-2 students better understand the EnVision 2.0 Math program.  This program is sponsored by the Title 1 Office of the Jackson Township School District.  Families who attend this informative workshop will receive materials and learn strategies to help reinforce what children are learning in school.  This session will be held in the Holman APR from 5:00 – 7:00pm for families of students in Grades K - 2 on March 1st.

TIME  (Together Influencing Math Excellence)

What is TIME?  TIME will provide a way for your whole family to have fun doing Math.  TIME is based on three components – Awareness, Confidence, and Encouragement.  You and your child will work in pairs or small groups to solve mathematical problems, work cooperatively, and “talk Math”.  Sessions for Grades 3 and 4 students and their families will be held in the Holman IMC on 2/4, 2/11, 2/18, 3/3, and 3/10 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Please contact the main office as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this session, as space is limited.

Sincerely,

Rich Karas

Principal, Holman Elementary
