Here's What We Are Learning During the Month of September:
This month, learners will begin their first unit of study: Building a Reading Life. During this unit, students will learn how to make reading more meaningful and rewarding. Students will learn how to apply the behaviors of "good readers" and will learn the routines of Reader's Workshop. In addition, students will learn how to monitor their comprehension, envision a story, and form predictions based on text evidence. Students will also learn how to summarize a text and use context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.
This month, learners will begin their first unit of study: Crafting True Stories. During this unit, students will learn how to write personal narratives by zooming in on a small moment. Students will learn how to develop their narratives by crafting strong openings & closings, and stretching their writing with vivid details, strong action verbs, figurative language, and dialogue.
This month's instructional focus will be on multiplication & division. Students will explore these concepts by using manipulatives and visual models to build a conceptual understanding of the topic. Students will learn how to model the concepts, as well as strategies to help them memorize their facts. Please Note: It is IMPERATIVE that students are studying their basic multiplication facts DAILY. The goal is to have all facts memorized by Christmas Break. Thank you! =)
The following units will be covered this month:
- Topic 1: Understand Multiplication & Division
- Topic 2: Multiplication Facts: Using Patterns
This month, learners will begin their first unit of study: Government & the Democratic Process. During this unit, students will explore the responsibilities of the local, state, and federal government. Students will also participate in a class election.
