Welcome to our classroom website.  This is a great place where I will be able to keep families and students up to date on what we are learning and doing in the classroom.

First Grade Game Day - Tuesday, June 4th

The PTN is happy to announce that it will be providing a free pizza lunch from a local pizzeria for all students on the day their grade participates in Game Day.

Each student will be given 2 slices of pizza and a bottle of water at no charge.  If your child(ren) does not wish to participate, (s)he can either purchase lunch form the cafeteria or bring in a lunch from home as usual.

The PTN hopes that this adds to the fun and excitement of the Game Day experience.

Your child’s COMPLIMENTARY GAME DAY SHIRT will be sent home soon.  Please have your child(ren) wear his/her shirt on their grade level’s Game Day. *T-shirts should remain in-tact and should not be cut or embellished.

    book club

In Readers' Workshop we are going to get to know our characters by reading together in Book Clubs, and then performing our books.   Every Friday, we would love to have some fun snacks to munch on while we chat about our books.  If you can donate some treats, whether they are store bought or not, please let me know.  I am looking for something for this Friday 3/29, Friday 4/5 and Friday 4/12.  Thank you :)

We are excited to begin a new Language Arts program in first grade called Fundations.   Fundations intruction emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonics-word study, high frequency word study, fluency, vocabulary, handwriting, and spelling.  More information will be coming home soon.

Please don't forget to check your child's folder every night.  Please send in a sweater, jacket or sweatshirt for our outside recess.  Remember girls can bring an old pair of sneakers to change into when we go out.

    ~ Readers Workshop ~

    Nonfiction Unit

In this unit, we will get super smart about topics.  We will learn all we can from our books, by previewing the text, predicting, noticing text structure, and synthesizing information from multiple sources (picture, print, text boxes).  We will continue to use our good habits to decode unfamiliar words, and we will read with smoother voices, to sound like experts.

Please continue to read at home and sign the reading log.  Students know where they can choose books from.  However, there can be a range from easy to more difficult in a single leveled bin.  They are encouraged to trade their books anytime if they are too hard.   Here are a few tips for reading at home with your child.

    Power Words

Our first list of high frequency words have been sent home along with flashcards.  Please read the sheet that went home explaining how and when your child will be tested on their words.  If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

    ~ Writer's Worshop ~  Informational/Nonfiction Chapter Books

We will begin with making a basic type of information book -a picture book- and ends with students creating multiple information chapter books, filled with elaboration, interesting text elements, and pictures that supplement the teaching of words.

We are working on Topic 4 - Subtraction Facts to 20.

Your child will need a backpack and eventually an old shirt to use as a smock.  Please label the shirt and put it in a large ziplock bag. Everything else will be supplied.

     Thank you
