Principal Message April, 2022

Dear Elms Families,

It is hard to believe that we are entering the final stretch of this unprecedented school year. We hope that all of our families are finding time to enjoy the spring days and beautiful weather.

Green Day at Elms - April 11th: Elms is a Green Ribbon School! For many years, Elms Elementary has worked diligently to educate our students and our community about the importance of sustainability. The purpose of such efforts is to [1] reduce our carbon footprint, our environmental impact and cost, [2] to improve the health and wellness of students and staff, and [3] to provide environmental education effectively incorporating S.T.E.M., civic skills, and green career pathways.

With an overall commitment to teach and learn about the real world issues and challenges our children face, Elms students have had the opportunity to contribute to a variety of sustainable projects and green learning experiences. Some student projects have included [but are not limited to] Gardening Club, Physical Education Clubs, the Challenge Island Recycling Assembly,  aquaponics harvesting,  Farm to School taste testing experiences, plastic bag collections, clothing drives, the raising of trout eggs and the release of the trout into the Manasquan River.

This school year, the Elms Green Team launched a vigorous recycling education campaign designed to enhance our recycling program with an emphasis on recycling plastic bottles and paper, ensuring single stream recycling in the cafeteria and in the classrooms. The team has monitored the school’s recycling initiatives and provided positive and constructive feedback to individual classes and departments in the building. All of these grassroots efforts are complimented by the district’s commitment to energy efficiency. You may not be aware that Elms Elementary is heated by geothermal energy. In addition, a large percentage of Elms’ electrical power comes from the solar power located right on the Elms campus!

With these efforts in mind, we are proud to announce that Elms Elementary is the only school in the state of New Jersey to be nominated as a “Green Ribbon” school in the 2021-2022 school year. On April 11th, all students and staff are invited to wear green to celebrate this coveted recognition. Additionally students will be participating in several “sustainable” experiences throughout the day including a video presentation about our efforts created by our very own Green Team. Students will also participate in a sustainable learning walk, a blueberry tasting experience, plus related classroom lessons. Each student will receive a reusable bag to align with the state’s new law regarding plastic bags. Each homeroom will also be gifted a plant for their classroom complements of the Elms PTN.

Wax Museum: Attention all 4th and 5th grade students! Elms Elementary is excited to announce that we will be facilitating our first annual Living Wax Museum! Over the past few weeks, 4th and 5th grade students have studied a person of historical significance to portray. The “living wax museum” scheduled for April 13th will showcase interactive biographies where students, dressed as famous individuals, stand at attention, while visitors walk around and tour exhibits illustrating the life of the person represented. We look forward to seeing our students’ historical performances. We are very proud of our students for their time and efforts on this project.

April is Autism Acceptance Month: In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, we invite all of our students and staff to celebrate by wearing bright colors on April 26th.  We look forward to celebrating all of our differences and supporting inclusivity for all of our students and their abilities.

Teacher Appreciation: Every May, as a school community, we take a moment to thank our wonderful teachers and staff for their hard work and dedication to our students. As we enter the last few weeks of the school year, I wanted to commend all the Elms staff for their commitment and perseverance in the face of unique and unusual  challenges. The wonderful educators at Elms always put students’ needs first and remain committed to the success of our students and our community. Thank you for all you do!

Thank you also to our parent community and our Elms PTN. Your partnership and support is foundational to the success of Elms Elementary. Thank you also to all of our parents who contributed to our Teacher Appreciation Week.

Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten Registration in the Jackson School District will take place by appointment.  Registration packets are available online and in all elementary schools.  We encourage all parents (this INCLUDES students already enrolled in the pre-K program) to pre-register online to save time and streamline the registration process at the time of your appointment.   It is incredibly important that parents register during this period so we can plan ahead for the next school year. If you are a parent of a kindergarten student (regardless if they are already in the pre-K program), we kindly ask that you make every effort to register your child during the months of April and May.  All information is available on the Registration Page on the district website.

Please call (732) 833-4680 x3522 to schedule an appointment to register your child for Kindergarten.

NJSLA (State Standardized Testing: Continue to visit the district website to view the NJSLA testing calendar (go to the For Parents and Students tab and then Assessments and Grading).

NJSLA Testing begins in May:  NJASK Science will be administered in May.  We encourage you to visit the district’s Understanding Assessments and Grading’’ resource page, which has a host of information about the PARCC and other assessments – including:

As I’m sure you are aware, a child will perform more successfully on a test if he/she has proper rest, good nutrition, and arrives at school on time. Your special attention to these areas will help ensure your child has his or her best chance for success!

Please reach out if you have any questions. We are always happy to help you!

Best Wishes,
