May 2019 Principal's Message
May 2019
Dear Holman Families:
Mother’s Day is celebrated differently from family to family but the spirit of the day remains the same. We honor that person we call “mom” for being that special person in our lives that sticks with us through thick and thin. It has been so great going into the classrooms and watching many of the students create various projects and writings for the special people in their lives. My best wishes to all for a Happy Mother’s Day.

Field Days
The temperatures are getting warmer and Field Days are getting closer. I have spoken with many of the grade levels about these exciting days. Keep in mind that these fun days are a privilege for students. Students who continually misbehave may not have the opportunity to participate in Field Day.
Field Day dates for individual grade levels are as follows:
Kindergarten 6/5 Third Grade 5/31
First Grade 6/6 Fourth Grade 5/30
Second Grade 6/7 Fifth Grade 5/28
Please note that there will be a few new procedures during Field Days this year. Parents wishing to watch their children participate in the field events will be required to stay in the cordoned areas marked off with yellow caution tape. Parents will not be permitted to eat lunch with the students or visit the students on the field. The same will be true for the tug-of-war and water balloon toss.
Parents may volunteer and sign up to assist with events on the field. To do this, you must contact the specific grade level representative below. Parents may also volunteer on the day of the event (as needed basis only). Only parents who are signed up and wearing an authorized bracelet may participate on the field. No exceptions! Thank you for your cooperation in this matter of safety.

NJSLA Testing for Grades 3, 4, and 5 students
Continue to visit the district website to view the NJSLA testing calendar (go to the District Resources tab and then Assessments and Grading). REMINDER: the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment - NJSLA (formerly known as PARCC) Testing begins on May 8th. Testing will also occur on May 9th, 14th, 15th, and 16th. NJSLA Science will begin on May 30, 2019 through May 31, 2019. We encourage you to visit the district’s “Understanding Assessments and Grading’’ resource page, which has a host of information about the PARCC and other assessments – including:
- The full testing calendar for each school;
- A list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ);
- Sample tests, videos and more.
The New Jersey Student Learning Assessment Science (NJSLA Science) is a state test given to students in grade 5 throughout New Jersey. These tests were developed to evaluate the achievement of students within the context of New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards in the area of Science.
As I’m sure you are aware, a child will perform more successfully on a test if he/she has proper rest, good nutrition, and arrives to school on time. Your special attention to these areas will help ensure your child has his or her best chance for success!
Moving Up Ceremony
The Fifth Grade Moving Up Ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2019 in the Holman School Gymnasium at 9:15 a.m. Parents are invited to attend this special program; however, space is limited to two (2) guests per student. For safety concerns, we will not be able to accommodate younger or older siblings. Due to limited parking, it is recommended that you carpool or walk to the school, if possible. Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to recognizing your student’s efforts on this special day.
Student Dress Code
It is starting to become that time of the year when the warm breezes are blowing and we can soon begin to wear summer clothing. With that said…..It also time to review dress codes with students especially the excerpt regarding NO FLIP-FLOPS or OPEN TOED Shoes. We have seen several violations which as you know can be a real hazard. Please see the excerpt from the student handbook below. If you have any questions please contact the Main Office.
Restrictions on freedom of students’ dress will be imposed whenever the code of dress in question is unsafe either for the student or for those around him/her or whenever it is disruptive to school operations and the educational process in general. Specifically:
- Students will not wear hats, caps, or other head coverings in the building.
- No clothing, jewelry, or item that promotes violence, bigotry, profanity or use of a restricted substance, and/or otherwise deemed inappropriate, or interferes with the instructional setting.
- Jewelry and clothing should not restrict movement, be distracting or cause a safety hazard to oneself or others.
- No micro-mini shorts or skirts will be permitted. Skirts/shorts must be no shorter than mid-thigh in length.
- No boxers, spandex shorts or cutoff shorts will be worn.
- No torn or tattered clothing.
- All students must wear shoes at all times for safety and health reasons. No flip-flops or open-toed footwear are allowed.
- Students should not wear outer clothing in the building.
- All shirts should cover students’ shoulders, backs and come down to the waistline.
- Tank tops and backless shirts are not permitted.
Items from Home
Students may not bring “tradable items”, such as baseball cards, Pokémon cards, action figures, My Little Ponies, collectible stickers, etc. to Holman School. All of these items must be left at home. Thank you very much for your assistance and support with this important matter.
Looking and Planning Ahead:
On Tuesday, May 21st the Board of Education Meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at the Administration Building.
School will operate on a shortened day on Friday, May 24th and will be closed on Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day. Enjoy the holiday with family and friends.
On Tuesday, May 21st we will have Kindergarten Registration Make-Ups 9:30AM – 11:30AM.
Sincerely,
