Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

September 4, 2018

Dear Jackson School District Staff,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!  We are looking forward to a new year and to working alongside fellow staff members who make the Jackson School District such an amazing place. As sad as I’m sure we all are that summer has ended, I hope you join me in the excitement that always comes with a new school year.

This year we will be implementing curriculum updates in several areas: in math for grades 6-12, in media/technology for grades K-12, in business for grades 9-12 and in family and consumer science for grades 6-12.  We are excited to be enhancing student engagement practices district-wide with the help of our Title II Teacher Leaders, and we will be expanding in-class resources for the third grades.

With the input of varied stakeholders, we will be recommending a new middle school schedule and will begin a review of our high school schedule.

Embedded into all areas of curriculum will be our commitment to students’ mental health, and we will be continuing our efforts in that area with a new mental health curriculum and procedures, such as Responsive Classroom and Social Emotional Learning programs.

The projects completed this summer by our hardworking facilities staff will continue through the year as we continue to enhance security measures in the district by completing the installation of safety vestibules throughout the district. Also related to security, we will be seeking voter approval by way of a special question on the voting ballot to add six security guards to our existing security program.

All of these endeavors fit perfectly into the theme of this October’s inservice, which is “Student Engagement.’’ Everything we do - the lessons in our classrooms, the support staff who keep things running daily, the handling of the hungry teenagers in the cafeterias, the way we get thousands of students back and forth to school safely, how our buildings are maintained - is focused on making the school experience the best in can be for our students. And no district does that better than the staff of the Jackson School District.

Sincerely,

Stephen Genco

Superintendent of Schools
