March 9, 2023 - Letter to the Community Regarding Our State Aid Crisis

To the Jackson School District Staff, Families and Community,

The Jackson School District was recently shocked with the news that instead of losing the $2.5 million in state aid for next year that we expected, we would instead be cut by a devastating $6.2 million in state aid. This is on top of the $16 million in state aid we have lost over the past five years - and it is $3.7 million MORE than we anticipated, based on reduction projections prescribed to us under the S2 state aid funding cuts. Over the course of seven years, we will have lost $23 million in state aid.

We have fought through a state aid crisis for the past five years, which was just made exponentially worse. We have rising expenses in the millions due to state-mandated services we must provide to all resident students. We have exhausted our surplus and like you, just about everything we need to purchase to run this district has gone up in price. This crisis is not the result of any one specific budgetary item. It has been accumulating over the past several years with enormous and unexplainable cuts to our state aid.

This letter is to alert you to the severity of the situation and to continue our commitment to providing factual, candid and comprehensive information about our situation and plans as they develop. We are still in the midst of analyzing every single element in order to make hard decisions and find creative solutions to maintain the integrity of our educational program. We are still very much in the thick of that process and we strongly encourage you to not view rumors or speculation as fact. As always, we will present thorough and detailed plans and proposals in public and will share them with the school community.

HOW TO STAY INFORMED:

As described on our Budget and Financial Information Page of our website, we hold a series of public meetings and presentations with multiple opportunities for public input. You will see the Feb. 22 presentations (and the link to a video of the meeting) from various departments and an overview from me about our state aid situation and challenges. I strongly encourage you to visit that page for more information and to monitor news as we release it. 

There are two upcoming Board of Education meetings that will address the 2023-2024 Budget:

  • March 15: The annual introduction of the Tentative Budget. Meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center of Jackson Memorial High School. 
  • April 26: The Public Hearing on the Proposed Budget. Meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center of Jackson Memorial High School.

The only thing larger than the disappointment we are feeling is our profound commitment to our students, staff and community. I want to assure you that we will do everything possible to keep the impact as manageable as we can, to think outside the box for creative solutions and to preserve what the Jackson School District means to all of us.

Carta a la Comunidad Sobre Crisis Presupuestaria e Información

Para el personal, las familias y la comunidad del Distrito Escolar de Jackson,
