April's Principal Message

Dear Elms Parents,

We are proud to announce our…

YOUNG AUTHOR’S GALLERY WALK
On April 26th (5:30-6:45pm) join us to celebrate our Young Authors...
...Our Writing at the Elms School

Think back to the day when writing was celebrated by students standing up in front of the classroom and reading their writing to the class. For some, it was an opportunity to be in front of the class and have everyone’s attention and for others, it was agony. Celebrations have evolved since then and today, are a way in which we affirm ourselves as a “community” — a community of writers.

Welcome to our Gallery Walk...
What is an Author Gallery Walk? It is a special celebration where student work is displayed around the school.  There are blank Post-it notes and pencils available. With pen/pencil in hand, students, their families and teachers will circulate around the school reading the published pieces. Offer a compliment (what the author did really well) on the post-it and leave it for the writer to read tomorrow.
Some ideas on good compliment starters…

•    My favorite part is…
•    I like how you…
•    You did a really great job on…
•    I wish the story didn’t end because…
•    I learned…
•    Wow! You used some great…(vocabulary, idioms, metaphors…)
•    The way you explained...was…
•    I can tell how hard you worked to make me feel...because…
•    This was so interesting because….
•    Congratulations! You are a super writer. I wish I could read more.

Celebrating Success!

Thank you to Ms. Villecco for putting together our March Madness Reading Challenge!  Congratulations to all of our participants, it was a job well done.  Everyone enjoyed their pajama party bonus!

Thank you to our PTN members who helped with our First Trash to Treasure on Earth Day.

Lego Drive:

The Elms Elementary School is looking for donations of any unused, unwanted, loose Lego bricks to use in our STEM Lab Maker Space.  If you have any loose, unwanted Legos, please send them in with students and bins will be provided for collection.  We appreciate your help!  To make things more interesting - and fun - the first 2 classes who fill their bucket will get a surprise event with Mr. D'Ambrosio!  Last day for donations is May 1!
