Principal Message - March 2020

March 2020

Dear Elms Families,

As spring approaches, we look forward to warmer weather (although it hasn’t been that bad), and longer days ahead. Let’s take a moment to glance back on this past month and then to gaze forward toward Spring to see what’s in store.

SHOUT OUTS!

We all enjoyed Read Across America Week due to the hard work and dedication of  Mrs. Villecco, Ms. Brenner and Mrs. Konopack! Thank you to our Read Across America Committee and the Jackson Education Association (JEA) for sponsoring our Read Across America week and our Book Fair Night.  Additional thanks to our teachers who bring reading to life as only they can. Another BIG thank you shout out goes to our PTN volunteers who spent time preparing and running the Book Fair and the awesome teachers and High School Students who stayed after school to set up, or who came in to lead an activity. The students will most definitely remember this special week!

Read Across America

During the week of Read Across America, Elms Elementary showcased our school’s love of reading. Each day there was a spirit activity for all to enjoy, from crazy hats to cozy pajamas. We can’t forget to mention the Book Fair that is always a favorite!

New this year, there was  a “Vocabulary Parade” through the halls.  Our students dressed up, portraying words from various themes as they marched and read! This was a memorable event and we thank you for helping your children create such unique costumes! The hallways were certainly busy with foot traffic as we welcomed our Elms families for a night of special activities.

Special Events Celebrated in February

We’d like to thank all the families and friends who attended Candy Bingo! A great time was had by all as we came together to test our luck and win ‘sweet rewards.’ Special thanks to our esteemed teachers, both present and retired, who volunteered their time to connect with our students after school hours.

March is Women in History Month

Women in History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by women and a time for recognizing their role in U.S. History.  At Elms Elementary we are excited to celebrate Women in History Month as we plan engaging activities to supplement our curriculum during the month of March.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 20-21 school year will run from March 16th through the 20th. Let's get ready for Kindergarten! Kindergarten Registration in the Jackson School District will take place March 16-20. Registration packets are available online and in all elementary schools. We encourage all parents to pre-register online to save time and streamline the process.

It is incredibly important that parents register during this period so we can plan ahead for the next school year. If you are a parent of a kindergarten student, we ask that you make every effort to register your child during our kindergarten roundup week. All information is available on the Kindergarten Registration Page on the district website. Also, don't forget to bring your child with you to registration so he or she can be screened.

PTN Event

Be sure to come out for a fun filled Friday evening on April 24th from 4:00-9:00PM at iPlay America in Freehold. The tickets to join in the fun are FREE! This fundraiser will give 20% of the  proceeds from food sales to Elms! The flyer is available on the PTN Website, and must be presented at the event.

Report Cards

The 2nd Trimester is coming to an end on March 17th and the third, and final, will begin March 18th.  Report Cards will be available on April 2nd via the parent portal. If you have problems with the parent portal, please contact portalsupport@jacksonsd.k12.nj.us

With report cards on our minds and student achievement a common goal for parents and teachers; please remember that one of the most important things we can do to support our children’s success is to read with our children every day.  Research tells us that student daily reading practice (15-30 minutes) will continue to strengthen skills in all academic domains. Have your child read to you; read with your child; and/or read to your child. Consider keeping a daily writing journal to share and record ideas generated from their reading.  Writing ideas will serve to strengthen expressive written language skills. Daily reading and writing both in school and at home will continue to strengthen the foundation for success in all academic domains.

Character Education Assemblies

Throughout the month, students in grade 3-5 attended character education assemblies hosted by our guidance counselor, Mrs. Feibelman and Ms. Powell. We delved into understanding positive character traits like respect and honesty. Furthermore, students worked on an activity that created a concrete symbol of how our interactions with others affect us. Be sure to ask them to share their ‘hearts’ with you! This month, our K-2 friends will also participate in character education assemblies.

 6th Grade Middle School Orientation

Fifth grade students will be visiting Goetz Middle School on April 22nd for a tour of their future school! Grade 5 parents are invited to the Goetz Middle School that evening for Middle School Orientation.  For more information, please see the Goetz website, or contact the Goetz Middle School.

A Note from our School Nurse:

In order to minimize risk to others, we encourage parents to keep your children home if they exhibit any flu-like symptoms which include fever, body aches, chills, headache, coughing or vomiting.  We advise that you keep your children home from school until they are fever-free for a full 24 hours without the use of any fever-reducing medications (such as Tylenol or Advil). While in school, we will be reminding everyone about the importance of preventative actions, such as frequent handwashing and covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze.  The CDC also recommends the Flu Shot for anyone above the age of 6 months and high risk groups.

Building Safety

If your child has forgotten any necessary item they may need during the school day, please place it on the rolling cart outside the front doors. Our security guard will bring it inside and reception will ensure it is delivered to its proper destination.

It is the policy of the Jackson School District that every individual visitor entering the building must have their own valid State, Federal, or Military ID.  No visitor will be admitted without the proper identification. This is for the safety of our students and staff.
