Elms Principal Message- March 2021
Dear Elms Families,
As we look ahead to March 1st and the transition to the Phase II plan of students returning to the school building 5 days a week, please know that the staff of Elms Elementary remains committed to the health and safety of our students and our community. We would like to acknowledge the continued hard work and patience demonstrated by Elms students, families and staff these past months as we continue to work together to help our Elms students be safe and successful.
Spelling Bee: Ms. Tice, Mr. Levinson, and Mr. Burgos would like to acknowledge all of our students who participated in the Elms Spelling Bee. Everyone did a great job! We would like to also formally congratulate Elms’ Spelling Bee Winner, Aiden Boehler! Aiden has won the Elms Spelling Bee two years in a row; outstanding work Aiden! Aiden will move on to represent Elms Elementary in the regional spelling bee competition. Best of luck! We are proud of you!
Carline Considerations: Please be advised that parent pick up at dismissal time will continue to take place at the car loop only on the north side of the building. If parents are not signed up for the carline, identification will be required and sign out procedures will be facilitated by school staff in a “drive through model”.
Student safety is our priority! We appreciate your patience and support while we transition to Phase II. We will continue to evaluate our carline procedures for improvement while maintaining student safety as our priority.
Parents, please know that we anticipate a higher than normal volume of pick ups at dismissal time as groups 1 & 2 will be attending 5 days a week. Starting March 1st, Elms Elementary will have many parents picking up their children at the car loop in the afternoon. Parents, please be sure to pull up as directed by staff when in the carloop. Your cooperation in the process has a very positive effect on the traffic patterns. We appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Pre-School Registration is Open - Lottery Closes Feb. 26
New for 2021-2022: We are offering a FULL-Day, 5 day-a-week program at each of our elementary schools.
Pre-School Lottery closes Feb. 26 - after it closes, names will be drawn and those parents will be called in lottery order to be offered a spot in our Pre-School program. See Pre-School Lottery Link for Lottery Form and Info
Kindergarten Registration Has Begun! This year Kindergarten Registration will be done BY APPOINTMENT during February and March. Please do not wait to register - it is very important that we process your registration as soon as possible so we can place your child for next year. Please fill out our online Pre-Registration Form, then the supplemental forms and call right away to make your appointment for February and March. The World According to Humphrey ~ One School! One Book!:
Our school is about to take part in a special, communitywide shared reading event. Every family will receive a copy of the same book—The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney—and will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone—students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff—will all be following along together.
Your child will receive a copy of The World According to Humphrey at a special school-wide virtual assembly introducing the program and the book. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each night.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions by visiting Ms. Konopack’s classpage to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In Media class, students will explore the book. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about The World According to Humphrey!
This is a novel program in that children of all grade levels will all be listening to the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child's own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.
Attention All Remote/Synchronous Parents: To participate in the One school One Book event, parents can pick up their copy of The World According to Humphrey at the Elms Car Loop on Tuesday, February 23rd.

**Remote Academy Students in Grades K-1 can also pick up their Bob’s Books [literary resource to supplement remote academy instruction] at that time.
We know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. We hope to talk with both you and your student sometime in the days to come about Humphrey the hamster and the lessons he teaches the children—and adults—of Longfellow School. “When a whole school reads a book, there's a lot to talk about.” With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.
Display My Art:
We are excited to announce that very soon, “Display My Art,” an art-based fundraiser, will be working with Elms Elementary to reproduce your child’s art into a wide variety of keepsake products, perfect for gift giving! This educational fundraiser will not only help our school PTN raise money but more importantly, support your child’s creativity.

Hybrid Students: On February 16th and February 17th, all hybrid students received a paper template from their homeroom teacher to take home for their artwork illustrations.
All Synchronous/Remote Students: If your child is All Remote, then parents can simply print the attached templates below for their illustrations. If Synchronous/Remote parents would like to pick up a hard copy template for the project, hard copies will be available at the reception desk between 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
All student submissions must be returned to the Elms School by March 3rd. All Synchronous/Remote parents can drop off art submissions to the Elms reception desk on or before March 3rd.
Student art work should be labeled with the student’s name, the teacher’s name, and the grade level. In the near future, parents will receive information from the PTN regarding how to order keepsake gifts with your child’s artwork on it, perfect gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day!
We hope you participate in this fun, art experience. We look forward to seeing all of our students’ creative illustrations!
