    The Jackson School District follows the 2020 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education, which also includes family life education and sex education.     NJ law allows parents to opt their children out of instruction in health, family life education or sex education. 

    18A:35-4.7. Parent's statement of conflict with conscience
    Any child whose parent or guardian presents to the school principal a signed statement that any part of the instructions in health, family life education or sex education is in conflict with his conscience, or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs shall be excused from that portion of the course where such instruction is being given and no penalties as to credit or graduation shall result therefrom.

    Letters for Grade 5, 8 and 11 students will be sent via email to the student and the parent/guardian before the Health Lessons are presented:

    for Grade 5 this will be in May;

    for Grade 8 this will be before the Second Semester; 

    for Grade 11 it will be on or before October 12 for Semester 1; On or before February 28, for Semester 2.

    If an opt out component is chosen - the emailed letter is to be returned fully completed - to the child's Physical Education Teacher by the date designated in the communication.

    Parents/guardians may also submit a letter to their child's Physical Education Teacher if you would like to opt your children out of instruction in health, family life education or sex education; please submit a signed letter to your child's Physical Education Teacher by October 1 of a given school year, or at any other time you are invited to do so by your child's Physical Education Teacher and/or Principal.  (See the schedule above as to dates/times for emailed letter/communication from your child's Physical Education Teacher.)
