Be Prepared for Graduation:
Please keep in mind that the state of New Jersey requires the successful completion of certain assessments (e.g. the NJSLA tests) in order for a student to graduate.
Update on Graduation Assessment Requirements for the Class of 2023
On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, Governor Murphy signed P.L.2022, c.60 (ACS for A-3196/S-2349), which requires the State Board of Education to administer the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) as a field test for the class of 2023. This law also prohibits the results of the NJGPA field test (First Pathway), a substitute competency test (Second Pathway), or portfolio appeal (Third Pathway) from being used as a prerequisite for graduation for students expected to graduate in the class of 2023. There is no graduation assessment requirement for any student who is expected to graduate with the class of 2023.The graduation assessment requirements for the classes of 2024 and 2025 remain in place and are available for districts on the Graduation Assessment Requirements webpage.
Assessments We Use
-
NJSLA (State Assessment)
The spring 2019 statewide assessment in ELA and math will be the NJSLA-ELA/M. The number of test items will be reduced on all ELA and mathematics state assessments beginning with the spring 2019 administration, resulting in fewer units on most state assessments as compared to prior years. The NJSLA-ELA/M measure the same constructs and use the same item banks as the previous assessments. As a result, the current assessments support reporting using the same scale scores and performance levels as in prior years.

SCHOLASTIC MATH INVENTORY (SMI) (District Assessment)
Scholastic Math Inventory (SMI) is a computer-adaptive mathematics test that:
- Provides a measure of students’ readiness for mathematics instruction in the form of a Quantile measure
- Reports how well students understand, and are likely to be successful with, various grade-appropriate mathematical skills and topics.
The Jackson School District administers the SMI three times per year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) to all students in Grades 3 - 8. The assessment is administered via a computer and takes approximately 20 - 30 minutes to administer.
-
SCHOLASTIC READING INVENTORY (SRI) (District Assessment)
Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) is a “computer-adaptive” reading comprehension test that:
- Assesses student reading levels (Lexile)
- Tracks students’ growth over time
- Matches readers to text to help guide instruction.
-
DYNAMIC LEARNING MAPS (DLM) (State Assessment)
Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) is the alternate assessment for students with the most significant intellectual disabilities in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
The Jackson School District administers the DLM in the Spring to all students in Grades 3 - 11 who are eligible for the assessment as determined by their IEP team. The assessment is administered via a computer and is administered over the course of several days in the Spring. -
FOUNTAS and PINNELL READING ASSESSMENT (District Assessment)
Fountas and Pinnell Reading Assessment is a comprehensive one-on-one assessment that reliably and systematically matches students' instructional and independent reading abilities to their Grade Level Expectations for Reading.
The Jackson School District administers the F&P three times per year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) to all students in Grades K - 2. The assessment is administered one-on-one and takes approximately 10 - 20 minutes to administer.

Access 2.0 Testing
Access 2.0 Testing
Each year in late winter/early spring New Jersey public schools administers the Access 2.0 Assessment for English Language Learners. The assessment is administered to Kindergarten through 12th-grade students who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). This assessment is given annually to monitor students' progress in learning academic English. The Access 2.0 assessment meets U.S. federal requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for monitoring and reporting ELLs’ progress toward English language proficiency and corresponds to the WIDA English Language Development Standards. Access 2.0 assesses the four language domains of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

ALTERNATE PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT in SCIENCE (APA) (State Assessment)
Alternate Proficiency Assessment in Science (APA) is a portfolio assessment designed to measure progress toward achieving New Jersey's state educational standards for those students with the most significant intellectual disabilities who are unable to participate in the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK) Science or the New Jersey Biology Competency Test (NJBCT).
The APA is administered in science where the nature of the student's intellectual disability is so severe that the student is not receiving instruction in any of the knowledge and skills measured by the general statewide assessment and the student cannot complete any of the types of questions on the NJASK Science or NJBCT assessments even with accommodations and modifications.
APA students in grades 4 and 8 are assessed in science. APA students in high school will be assessed in science in the year they receive instruction in the biology standards. -
NJSLA - Science
New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) for Science measures 5th, 8th and 11th grade students' ability to recall information and to solve problems by applying science concepts.
The Science test assesses knowledge and application skills in three clusters: Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. The Jackson School District administers the NJASK Science in the Spring to all students in Grades 3 - 8.
The assessment is administered via paper and pencil and takes 60 minutes to administer in 4th Grade and 120 minutes to administer in 8th Grade.
