COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to follow the New Jersey Student Learning Standards: English Language Arts with emphasis on reading and writing strategies for college preparation and career success.  A review of grammar and usage rules and the study of literature are also incorporated into the curriculum.  Narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive writings are addressed. Students will continue to develop research skills and explore topics that demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach. Students will use technology to enhance their reading and writing skills, to communicate, and to acquire useful information.

    A TYPICAL CLASS: Students will spend about 25 minutes at each rotation.

    Small Group – Students receive individualized, teacher-led instruction to help them master basic reading and writing skills.

    Independent Reading – Students select novels at their reading level and read them at their own pace. Each student is required to maintain a reading log/reflection journal and update progress on a daily basis.

    Instructional Software/Computer Work – Students receive individualized, computer-guided instruction in reading, vocabulary, and writing using the Empower 3000 instructional software.

    • Students are responsible for completing all missed work after being absent from school.
    • Class assignments and announcements will be posted on our Google Classroom page. All students will be provided with a code on the first day of school to access the page. 
    • School rules and consequences are outlined in The JLHS student handbook.
    • All high school students are expected to know and follow what is in the handbook.

    30% - Homework

    20% - Participation


    Available Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school until late buses (2:15 PM).
