October Principal's Message
October 2017
Dear Holman Families:
The leaves are turning color, the temperatures are beginning to fall, and the night sky is getting darker more quickly each day. Fall is here! We have many things planned at the Holman Elementary School this October.
It was great seeing more than 400 families during our Back to School Nights. I look forward to seeing other family members at Special Person's Day. This special event will be held on Thursday, October 5th. There will be two sessions held on that day to accommodate various grade levels.
Session 1 – Grades K, 1, and 2 – 9:45am
Session 2 – Grades 3, 4, and 5 – 1:45pm
Mark your calendars! H.O.P.E. (Holman Organization of Parents & Educators) will be hosting Holman School's Book Fair on October 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Holman students will have a chance to visit the Book Fair with their teacher at least once during the week. The Book Fair offers readers a wonderful selection of fun and engaging books. Reading is one of the most important skills that you can teach a child. I encourage you to read with your child any possible chance that you can get. Time spent reading with young learners has amazing effects on students’ educational success and creates a special bond. Our Family Fun Book Fair night is on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 6:30 PM. I can't wait to see everyone there for our Western theme! Please be sure to support H.O.P.E. Visit their link on our school web page. You can support H.O.P.E. in many ways. We look forward to 100% membership!
During the month of October, Holman School will be promoting character education by celebrating Respect Week, Safe School Week, and Red Ribbon Week. On Monday, October 2nd, students are encouraged to wear a BLUE SHIRT as it is national Blue Shirt Day to stomp out bullying. On Tuesday, October 3rd, students will listen to the Respect Pledge during morning announcements and sign a pledge in the classroom to be respectfully, responsible, and safe students in the Holman School community. On Wednesday, October 4th, students will celebrate Walk for Respect…Follow the Golden Rule. Students are encouraged to wear Gold/Yellow on that day. On Thursday, October 5th, students will be reading the Holman Pledge. On Friday, October 6th, students will wear Holman School colors (red, black, or grey) to show unity to be respectful to themselves and others. These initiatives showcase our commitment to providing students with a safe and healthy learning atmosphere. With this in mind, the Holman School is committed to the character development of all our students. We look forward to the other activities that will be occurring during this month of character building. I encourage you to visit the school website to view all the activities in October.
Looking and Planning Ahead:
As a reminder, please note that students will be off from school on Monday, October 9th as the Holman School will be closed for staff in-service.

IMPORTANT - Back to School Forms Thank you to all our parents and guardians who have completed their Back to School Forms already this year. If you have not yet completed your forms, please do so immediately. Remember that there are TWO tasks for back to school forms: One task involves completing the FORMS (Annual Notice, Publicity/Internet Publication, Acceptable Use of Internet, Emergency and Illness Info). The second task involves going to the CONTACTS tab when you are finished with the forms and filling that out.
NOTE: If you completed your forms but see that they have been re-sent to you ... this means there is an error on your form (mostly likely that you accidentally selected both “yes” AND “no” when asked to choose only one answer. If you see the forms appear when you log in again (and you are locked on the form screen and must complete them before leaving), please complete them again and resubmit.
Also please remember that if your Portal login does not work, please try the 'Forgot My Password' link above BEFORE contacting support, as most issues will be resolved through that feature. Please note that the "Forgot Password'' link will work only with parents who have an e-mail as their login ID. For questions or problems with your login IDs or password (or if you do not have them), please send an e-mail to portalsupport@jacksonsd.org and include your name and phone number, as well as your child's name, school, grade, student ID number and the problem you are experiencing and we will respond to you as quickly as possible.
Sincerely,
Rich Karas
