February 2020 Principal's Message

February 2020

Dear Holman Families:

Thank you very much for all of your generosity during HOPE’s Souper Bowl collection for the Jackson Food Pantry.  The Holman Community helped to raise close to 1,500 cans of food.

Even if you are not a San Francisco 49’ers fan or Kansas City Chiefs fan, you have to admit that it was a great Super Bowl.  It’s hard to believe that football season is over. It is also hard to believe that half of the school year is over. As always, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions about their progress.   Additionally, it is important for students to arrive to school on time. The homeroom period provides students with a smooth transition to a day of learning. At this time, the students review the day’s schedule, copy homework assignments, listen to morning announcements, get breakfast and distribute notes and materials from home to their teachers.  To provide your children with a positive start to the day, please plan your morning so your child arrives to school at 8:35 a.m. After 8:45 a.m., students are considered tardy.

School will be closed for staff and students on Monday, Feb. 17th in observance of Presidents’ Day.

With the weather getting colder (then warmer), please visit the district website for all information involving school closings and delays.  You may find this information by starting on the district’s main site (www.jacksonsd.org), highlighting the “Calendars and Hours” tab and clicking on “School Hours”.

A Note from our School Nurse

In order to minimize risk to others, we encourage parents to keep your children home if they exhibit any flu symptoms which include fever, body aches, chills, headache, coughing or vomiting.  We advise that you keep your children home from school until they are fever-free for a full 24 hours without the use of any fever-reducing medications (such as Tylenol or Advil). While in school, we will be reminding everyone about the importance of preventative actions, such as frequent handwashing and covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze.  The CDC also recommends the Flu Shot for anyone above the age of 6 months and high risk groups.

In the event of a delayed opening, please remember that

  • School will start TWO hours later than the scheduled start time.
  • MORNING CHILDCARE is CANCELLED when there is a delayed opening
  • Continue to check the district and school web page, as well as the Holman Student Handbook, for more information.  You can always call the school directly if you have any questions.

Remember, before sending your child out to the bus stop or dropping them off at school, please take a few moments to make sure that they are dressed appropriately for the weather.  Students should come to Holman School wearing clothing that keeps them warm during the school day. Dressing your child in multiple light layers is recommended so that they can remove the top layer if they get too warm while indoors.  As the temperatures get colder, please make sure that your child is also wearing the appropriate outerwear, such as a jacket, gloves, hat, etc.

The next HOPE meeting will be on February 19th at 7:00pm in the Holman IMC.  We invite all parents to attend this session.

Young Author’s Gallery/March Madness – Thursday, March 19

The Holman Elementary School, with support from the Jackson Rotary Club and the Jackson Education Association, will present our Young Author’s Gallery.  All are welcome to enjoy this event from the hours of 5:30-6:30 p.m. Published pieces from our very own Holman Authors of every age will be on display in the hallways for you to read, enjoy and compliment!  Come prepared with pen in hand to jot a note of support to your favorite authors. Additionally, that evening at 6:30, come see the Holman Staff play basketball against the fifth grade students. It’ll be a night filled with academics and athletics!  We hope to see all of you there.

Spelling Bee

Our school level spelling bee was held on Wednesday, January 8th.    The top five spellers were Lucas Dyck, Laila Ventura, Ivan Slavich, Carolena Dunzelman and, the school winner, was Swayum Mehta.  Congratulations to all of you and good luck as you represent Holman in the District Spelling Bee.

Looking and Planning Ahead:
