• Summer Reading Assignments - AP English Literature and Composition

Complete the summer reading titles prior to the beginning of the school year. The titles include Jane Eyre, The Color Purple, and How to Read Literature Like a Professor. All three titles are to be read entirely.

While reading the two novels, consider taking notes. The notes can include information about the characters and relationships, setting (there are multiple settings), plot advancement, importance of dialogue, differences in style for each author, and notes particular to each novel. For Jane Eyre, recognize that the novel is a bildungsroman, a novel dealing with one person's personal growth during formative years, and insightfully comment how this style impacts the read. For The Color Purple, recognize that the novel is an epistolary, a work in the form of letters, and insightfully comment how this chosen format impacts the read.

While reading How to Read Literature Like a Professor, consider taking notes about each chapter and understand the information provided by Thomas C. Foster.

Note taking is a personal choice as the notes will not be collected. However, as the year progresses, notes about all works of length are required and these notes are easier to organize while reading rather than returning to the title weeks or months later and trying to organize notes of importance.

Once the school year begins, whether we are in the classroom, teaching/learning remotely, or using a hybrid of these, the material will be reviewed and discussed. We will share ideas in person and / or via Hangout sessions. We will share storytelling ideas using Apps and we will stay connected as a group.
