Please mark your calendars:

Monday, September 23rd Back to School Night

I look forward to meeting you.

Here's what's happening in Room 17 this week:

On Thursday 4th and 5th grade students will be participating in our annual Veterans Walk to Remember. Students should wear red, white and blue (if possible) and sneakers.

Reading - We will continue to learn and apply the strategies of engaged readers. I will be modeling these strategies during our class read-aloud "My Father's dragon". Students will be learning how to choose "just right" books, keep a meaningful reading journal, and respond in writing to their reading.

Writing - Our first writing unit is "writing realistic fiction". Over the next several weeks, students will be creating a character and plot to write an entertaining realistic fiction story.

Math - We will continue Topic 1 - Place value. This week we will add the skill of rounding while we coninue to read and write numbers into the millions period. We will continue to to develop an understaning of our base-ten number system. I EXPECT THAT OUR TOIC 1 TEST WILL BE AT THE END OF THIS WEEK.

We will entering the world of multiplication very soon. The best gift that you and I can give your child is the support that they need to MEMORIZE their multiplication facts. Memorization of facts frees up all of their working memory so that they can concentrate on the bigger task - solving the real problem before them. It is never too early to pick up a set of multiplication flash cards from the dollar store and start practicing.

Please mark your calendars for our 4th Grade Back-to-School Night which is Monday, September 23rd.

Our class is scheduled for last lunch, which is 1:00.  I believe that the class would benefit from a mid-morning snack to help the students maintain their focus during lessons.  Since we will be working through snack, I ask that you limit the snack to one healthy food item per day.  (some examples: one piece of fruit, carrot sticks, pretzels, crackers) NO PEANUTS OR PEANUT PRODUCTS OF ANY TYPE DUE TO PEANUT ALLERGIES IN THE ROOM. Thank you for your cooperation!

I ask that you check our class page and class calendar on a regular basis.  I will update it weekly with information about our class and other important school announcements.
