In Room 109 we will work on some interesting topics and have fun working with others to complete various group activities. I look forward to getting to know all of you throughout this school year. Some of the topics we will cover include:

    Reading:

    • Nonfiction reading such as news articles, research materials, and biographies
    • Short Stories
    • Novels
    • Personal Narratives

    Writing:

    • Research Simulation Tasks (RST)-Reading and annotating non-fiction sources and identifying connections, differences, and similarities, then putting their thoughts into text while following the provided guidelines outlined by the teacher.
    • Literary Analysis Tasks (LAT)-Reading and annotating fiction sources such as short stories, novel excerpts, poetry, and song lyrics.  Students will then identify connections, differences, and similarities, then put their thoughts into text while following the provided guidelines outlined by the teacher.
    • Narrative Writing- This writing assignment could follow one of a few methods.  Students may be asked to write a personal narrative about an event or experience. Students may also be asked to view an image or a sentence and create an original story based on what they are shown. Finally, students may be asked to finish a story they read an excerpt of in class while keeping with the author's style and POV.

    Public Speaking:

    • Near the end of the year, students will be presenting a speech to the class demonstrating their command of body language, energy, and discussion. I generally begin prepping for this after the Holiday Break with short exercises for the kids to get used to being in front of the room.

Other items we will cover include proper citation methods, paragraph and essay formats, narrative elements, figurative and literal language, and grammar.
