Introduction to Business Course Description:
An overview of the forces within the business environment (i.e., globalization, economics, government, and society), and an introduction to the key functional areas within the firm, such as marketing, operations, accounting, finance, management, and human resources.
Students use this introductory course to learn about the business landscape, evaluate a potential investment in a business degree program in college, and begin career planning.
Textbook: Introduction to Business (McGraw-Hill Education)
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Describe the context and purpose of the business.
- Analyze the business environment.
- Discuss the legal forms of business.
- Explain and analyze the basics of the accounting function.
- Identify the importance of operations management to businesses.
- Describe and demonstrate decision-making skills in the marketing function.
- Describe the finance function and its relation to the securities markets.
- Describe the role and functions of a manager and demonstrate management skills.
- Describe the function of Human Resource Management.
Required Materials:
- Notebook
- Pen/pencil/highlighter
- Chromebook (charged)
- Folder (storage for all worksheets/handouts)
Evaluation Methods:
- 50% from Assessments (Tests/Quizzes/Projects)
- 40% from Participation (Classwork/Discussion)
- 10% from Homework (Practical Application)
Expectations and Classroom Procedures:
- Students will come to class on time, prepared, and ready to contribute to class discussions.
- Students will store their cell phones in an assigned classroom area for class time.
- Due dates for assignments are not suggestions and will be strictly enforced.
- Students are responsible for make-up work in the event of an absence. All classwork/homework will be posted daily on Google Classroom to assist the students.
- Students will be respectful to each other in every aspect.
