Summer, 2017
Dear Switlik Families,
As the school year ends, you begin your summer, enjoy time with your families, and remember to reflect on the important things life has to offer… I know that there are many successes and accomplishments that our teachers and students have to reflect upon and celebrate. I am thankful that I work with such a talented, dedicated and enthusiastic group of educators who always has the best interest of “our children” as their top priority!
We say goodbye to our fifth grade students. We hope you take many good memories of the years spent here with you as you leave. Many new and exciting opportunities await you at the Goetz Middle School. Take advantage of them and remember to choose to make each there a good one. Continue to be a Bucket Filler!
All fourth grade students had the opportunity to sign up if they were interested in being a selected as a safety. Candidates were reviewed and selected based on the following criteria: academics, respect to teachers and students, regular attendance and models positive and appropriate behavior. Students that met this criteria were chosen through a lottery system with the safety coordinators and administration. Those students who were selected will receive a letter in the month of July.
This summer, the elementary division of the Jackson Township School District is proud to announce “Check it Out!” our new Summer Reading initiative for students entering grades one through five in September 2017. We are excited to bring parents and children together in our mission to promote literacy through reading. Your child’s teacher, in collaboration with the media specialist, has introduced students to a list of choices for their summer reading enjoyment. These lists consist of a variety of genres, authors and reading levels for each grade. Although these lists include many high-interest and popular selections, students may also choose to read books not included. We ask that each child read five books and complete the reading log available on the summer assignments page. When we begin the 2017-2018 school year in September, our teachers will set aside time to discuss the books they read. Over the summer, you and your child can access these choices in several ways. The public library, a local bookstore or eBooks may be used. Additionally, our elementary school libraries will be open to students on select dates for book exchange. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please save the dates below and visit us during the summer.
I encourage you to take advantage of the different math web sites provided on your child’s teacher’s class web page. They will provide your child with activities and games to practice and to stay sharp with math facts over the summer.
Thank you to our generous community members that support our fundraisers and to Parent Teacher Network for all you do each and every day. I would like to say thank you for the greatest gift of all – your time. It is most appreciated and most valuable; not only to our students, but to all of whom you reach within our community each and every day.
In order for the PTN to continue to pay for all that it does, we need volunteers for the 2017-2018 school year. A few new committee chairs will also be needed for some of our fundraisers and activities. Information will be posted on the PTN website in September. If you have an idea for a new event or fundraiser, or if you are interested in volunteering, please contact the PTN board and they can submit for district approval.
On behalf of the Switlik Staff, we wish all of you a happy, healthy and safe summer. The portal will be available online Friday, June 23rd to review your child’s report card. We look forward to seeing everyone in September. School starts September 6, 2017.
Sincerely,
Kathleen McKiernan, Principal
