September 6, 2016

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!  I extend a warm welcome to all new and returning students, their families and to our dedicated staff.  A new school year brings with it renewed energy, a sense of optimism and excitement.

During these first weeks of school, all kindergarten, first and second grade students will be directed to the gym, by staff members in the hall and bus ramp. Teachers for these students will line up their students to be escorted to their classrooms. Please help your child learn their bus and student ID number and have them bring their bus pass to school for the first few weeks. Students attending Kindergarten and First Grade should wear their bus pass for the first two weeks of school to assist staff members in directing the children to the appropriate classroom.

Breakfast is offered daily for all to enjoy!  The cost is $1.65 full-priced and $.30 reduced.  The monthly menu can be found in our e-backpack or on our district website under food services.  Students who choose to purchase breakfast are to report directly to the APR upon arrival.  All students are expected to be in their designated classroom by 9:10 a.m.

Back to school forms will again be completed on the portal.  There are two sections on the portal that will require your attention.  The forms library, on which you will complete the annual notices and forms, and the contact screen, on which you will update your personal contact information.  In order to access these forms, you will log into the portal.  Your login ID is your email address.  If you have trouble logging in, follow the instructions on the Portal Login Page.

Switlik Elementary Back-to-School Nights will be held on the following nights at 7:00pm.:

  • Wednesday, September 14th- Kindergarten & First
  • Thursday, September 15th – Second & Third
  • Wednesday, September 21st – Fourth & Fifth

There you will have an opportunity to hear about some of our programs and begin forging that all-important relationship with the classroom teacher, as well as learn about the grade level curriculum, specialists, classroom technology, and other educational activities. I hope that you will visit the Switlik School Website (https://www.jacksonsd.org) often for the latest in news and information.

Whether you are new to Switlik Elementary School or a returning family, I encourage you to become an active participant in your child’s education and become familiar with the myriad of activities our school offers. There are multiple opportunities throughout the year with many jobs of all sizes and shapes that are essential to the success of our school. If you’re not sure how to become involved, please ask—we’d love to have you! The Switlik PTN is always looking for parent participation!  I strongly encourage all of our community to join our very active PTN. Your membership dues go to support our many cultural arts programs and assemblies for ALL students in our school. You might want to help out by volunteering for an event or committee.  PTN meetings are held each month and are open to all. The first meeting of the year is Thursday, September 15th @ 9:30 am. in the IMC. Please join us as the home school partnership is vital to the success of all our learners.

We have so much to be proud of at Switlik School and, working together, we will continue to create and foster an inclusive, dynamic and caring school community

I look forward to a successful school year and greeting you at Back to School Night!

Sincerely,

Kathleen McKiernan
