     Kindergarten Dismissal Routine Change

If there is ever a change in your child's normal dismissal routine, PLEASE WRITE ME A NOTE OR CALL THE SCHOOL the day of the absence. DO NOT E-MAIL ME. When I receive your notes, I put them on my Dismissal Clipboard and if you call the school, the office will let me know, so I can line up your children and dismiss them accordingly. It is IMPORTANT that you date these notes and that you use your child's full name.

Important Notes for the start of school:

-Please label everything that comes in, including water bottles. And don't forget sweatshirts/jackets as the weather will start to get cooler!  This can be as easy as pinning a ribbon or piece of fabric inside the clothing, so you DO NOT have to write on it.

-Please send a backpack with a folder with your child every day. You may use the Switlik folder that the PTN has supplied for you, or you can use another of your choice. BUT, please only send in 1 folder.  Sending 2 confuses the kids, and then they put some papers in 1 folder, and other papers in the other folder-thus causing things to get misplaced.

Wichita Public Schools: Free summer meals starts today
It is encouraged to have your child bring a lunch from home for the first few weeks in Kindergarten, BUT it will be available if needed. If your child is buying lunch, please put a note in their folder.  For those buying lunch, you will need to log on and put money in their lunch account.  Please check out the lunch webpage for more information on this process.  Checks may also be sent in a labeled envelope with their student id number on it and I can send it to the lunchroom in the morning and the money will be applied to their account.

-The students are also encouraged to bring in a water bottle each day. If a water bottle is left at school accidentally, please send in a new, clean one the next school day and I will  be sure to send home both bottles that day.

      homework

-I will be sending home activities and homework assignments each day to be returned on their next school day.  The activities and assignments will be developmentally appropriate, but may need someone to help read over the directions.
-Make a plan for your daily routines....one routine for their "in-school" day when your student gets home  Kids do better with routines and when they know what to expect, so be sure to start working on those plans now so that they have a nice transition to starting school.

PLEASE make sure reading is part of that daily plan.  It is so important for children to hear books being read to them right now so that they hear what a "good reader" sounds like.  They also will need to build up their own reading stamina, so allow them time to look at and "read" books on their own a little bit each day!  It is amazing what just a quick 15-20 minutes a day of reading will do for your child!
      -

I am looking forward to working with you and your child! Let's work together to make this a GREAT Year!

    Important Security Information

    LET ‘S WORK TOGETHER:

Student Safety is always paramount at Switlik School. We are asking for help in allowing our staff to focus on our shared goal of keeping our children safe and focused on learning. We appreciate your continued support and collaboration with us in ensuring that all students are safe.

ENTRANCE PROCEDURES: Valid Photo Identification is required each time you visit the school. We ask that you wait 20 minutes after student arrival to approach the building to be signed in for your visit. (Exceptions are made for scheduled appointments approved by your child’s principal/teacher/counselor.

    • All visitors will notify the receptionist using the buzzer by the visitor doors.
    • At the buzzer, all visitors are required to present their valid photo identification to the camera, state the purpose of their visit and/or specify with whom they have the appointment or which student they are picking up.
    • At the second set of doors, buzz again for access to reception.
    • This includes drop off and pick up for morning and aftercare

Please do not hold the door open for others behind you. We realize this feels awkward and against the rules of good manners, but it’s important that each visitor be acknowledged individually through the buzzer system.

    • If the appointment and/or purpose is verified, the visitor will be buzzed in and must present themselves to the receptionists immediately upon entry.
    • The visitor’s ID will be held until the visitor leaves the building and the visitor will receive a guest badge. This procedure helps us to know that the visitor has departed by ensuring they leave the same way they arrived.
    • Please limit “dropped off” items to only those items your child truly needs during the school day (e.g. necessary clothing changes, important schoolwork or lunch/items that are required for that day).  Using the buzzer by the visiting door, inform the receptionists these items are on the cart outside the visitor door.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES:  Please be advised at no time should any vehicle be entering or exiting through our bus ramp during arrival or dismissal times. Please review and adhere to the following:

Arrival Time: 8:50-9:05 a.m.  We will not have staff on duty before this time.

    • No child should be left off at school without a staff member in attendance.

    • Morning arrival for children is located at the back of the building (gym vestibule entrance).
    • Parents who choose the “Kiss and Drop” loop should adhere to the following safety procedures:
      • Pull up to the gym vestibule entrance doors to drop off your child.
      • Parents are to remain in their vehicles at all times.
      • Students must exit from the passenger side door.
      • Parents will not be permitted to enter the building during drop off arrival time.
      • Do not pass other vehicles while children are exiting from vehicle, this can create a dangerous situation.
      • Stay in the right lane along the curb, pull up to the red line:

After 9:05 a.m., the start of the school day, parents dropping off their children must park in the main parking lot and escort them inside to the main office receptionist desk in order to sign them in.  At this time, children are considered late. Valid Photo Identification is required each time you visit the school.

No child is to be dropped off at the main entrance without a parent/ guardian signing them in.

    Parent Pick Up:

    • Doors at the back of the building (gym vestibule entrance) for parent pick up will open at 3:05 p.m.
    • Present your valid photo identification to the receptionists prior to signing your child out.
    • Follow instructions of receptionists as to where to stand while waiting for your child to arrive.
    • Please do not park in the bus lane during this time.

If you will be picking your child up early, we prefer you notify the school as early in advance as you can, but at least by the morning of pick up. This can be done through a note sent in with the child, or an email to the teacher and principal. In the event of a true emergency, please contact the school reception desk by phone (732) 833-4650 extension 4135, prior to arrival if possible. We realize there are often instances where early pick-up is necessary (medical or other appointments), but we respectfully ask that you limit early sign-outs to only times when they  are necessary.

If your child has a food allergy please let me know ASAP

    Letter of the Week

During the week we will continue our phonics program, Fundations, and review the letters and sounds that have been taught.

    Letter's We've Worked On:

Please make sure you read and practice the skills that are sent home with each new Fundations Unit.

How Can You Help At Home:

Practice the letters and their sounds daily.

During review at home, see if your child can think of 3-5 words that begin with that letter.

Have him/her look for things around your house that begin with the letters you are practicing.

Identify the beginning letter of family members or  friends names.

Have your child help with shopping and helping to write the shopping list.

Use the Parent Information page that we send home each week.  Included with the Parent Information page, will be the letter pages.  Please use these pages to review with your child at home.  They can trace the letter with their finger, starting at the top and going down. As they finish tracing the letter, they can practice saying the letter name, the keyword picture and then the sound.  For example, Tt, top, /t/.   They can then color the picture.

***SAVE THESE PAGES TO MAKE A BOOK AT HOME AT THE END OF OUR INTRODUCTION UNIT***

Sight words are words that your child will see in their leveled reading books. Each week, we will send home flash cards of the words for that week.   Please keep these in a safe place and review them daily.

Our Sight Words This Week are:

    We have practiced

Please study these words EVERY night.

    Color of the Week:

Each week we will focus on a new color and color word.  During the week, we will do a few fun activities with that color. We will also designate a day to dress in that color.
Our color this week will be:

    Wear the color ________
We will send home color word cards for you to review with your child.  Please review these at home.  DO NOT COLOR THEM.  They should be able to read the word of the week. Many children feel very successful when they can read the color words so quickly in the year.

Color Words We Have Worked On:

(Please continue to review these words every night. Recognition of the words will help your child with their reading.)

    Readers Workshop
In class during our readers workshop time, we are learning how to be a Reader.
We are learning that there are 3 ways to read a book...
    1. Look at the pictures
    2. Look at the words
    3.  Retell the story
     read

It is highly encouraged that you read at home with your child.

Check out this chart to see how reading for an extra 20 minutes a day with your child will benefit him/her in school!
    Reading at home

Please make daily reading an important part of your day!

    Writers Workshop

Writer's Workshop is a designated time each day where students become “authors”.

After each mini-lesson students will have independent writing time where they will choose their own topic for their writing and have an opportunity to practice skills and strategies taught in the mini lesson. By giving the students choices in their topics, the writing becomes authentic, engaging, and meaningful. During this independent writing time the teacher will be meet with individuals or small groups to conference and encourage their growth as authors.

Students will learn to write, revise, edit, and publish stories throughout the school year. They will also begin to assess their own writing and learn to implement the characteristics of quality writing into their own work.

In the spring, we will showcase students’ writing during our “Switlik Author Night”. Students will have opportunities to share some of their published stories with their parents and celebrate their accomplishments.

So encourage writing at home....drawing a picture and then labeling it.  And if they can....write a simple sentence to go with it!

Or writing can be as simple as writing a list or making a card for someone!

And for those that need to copy words that they see at home....that is GREAT Practice too!!!

I love seeing the love notes your children bring me as well as the extra practice on the back of some of the homeworks. ....If your child is not doing this already  try it a few times a week.  You will see how quickly they will get better with practice (an one-on-one help!)
