    John led Jackson Memorial High School to its first-ever State Championship when he pitched the Jaguars to a 2-1 victory over Summit High School in the 1972 Group III State Championship at Princeton University.

    The lefty went 12-3 in his senior season, pitching in 18 games and completing all 13 of his starts. John pitched five complete game state playoff victories, including three straight shutouts. He allowed only two unearned runs for a state playoff record ERA of 0.00.

    The southpaw also won one game and saved another to help Jackson win the inaugural Ocean County Tournament. 

    Baseball honors include:

    • All-Shore and All-State teams

    • Sullivan Award finalist

    • Asbury Park Press’ “Athlete of the Week”

    • On the state’s “Team of the 70s”

    • One of the top pitchers of the last 30 years in 1990.

    John also was named All-County in football. He was a four-year varsity letter winner in baseball, three years in football, and two years in basketball. John attended Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) and served his country.
