The Mural Club at McAuliffe Middle School is a year long Service Learning activity. Members meet once a week to work on the Character Education Murals located in the stairwells at McAuliffe. Other projects have included a mural in the IMC, the backdrop for Wake Up McAuliffe and our mascot painted on a wall at the entrance to the gymnasium.
All eighth grade students are invited to participate in the mural Club in the fall. Those who volunteer their time throughout the year earn Service Learning Hours. The murals, which are painted in the stairwells of McAuliffe Middle School are an ever present reminder of the themes of Character Education.
In 2001, the first mural was designed to incorporate the Pillars of Character. With the guidance of art teacher Amy North, students researched the meanings and developed a greater understanding of respect, fairness, caring, responsibility, citizenship, and trustworthiness as they created visual representations of the foundations of each. Through representing “pillars” in various settings, the Undersea Mural was created. This mural took five years to complete.
The second mural was started in the spring of 2006. The “lost Mayan City in the Jungle” was completed in the spring of 2015.
The fall of 2015 brought the third, an Arctic Mural which highlights lifelike paintings of polar bears, walrus, a wolf and will include an Inuit village. We expect that this mural should also take several years to complete!
We are proud to boast that over 900 students have left their artistic legacy by volunteering their time to enhance the walls of McAullife Middle School!

No artistic skill is required for this club - only a willingness to volunteer your time to make our school beautiful!
